News From The Board

Welcome to a brand New Year! Our 2019 show line up promises new opportunities for our artists to exhibit their work. You can pick up an exhibition schedule postcard at the gallery reception desk. As well, you may find information and prospectuses as they become available at artsleagueoflowell.org/gallery/future. A big thank you to member Eleanor Mondale who gifted part of her art collection to ALL. At our holiday member show, "100 & Below" in December, the gallery included these and other works in a raffle to benefit ALL. The first show of the year, "HINT OF SPRING", brings warmth and color into January. The reception was Saturday, Jan. 19. The show continues to February 24.

At the Annual Members' Meeting in September 2018, votes were cast to ratify Board Member-at-Large positions for Margaret Femia, Tom Fiorelli and Caroline Gallagher. Since that meeting, the Board invited Tom Fiorelli to join the board as Vice President. That position will be ratified at the Annual Meeting this year.

Get out of the winter doldrums with Toss it Up for ALL Member Mingle at Warp & Weft on Market Street in Lowell, on Tuesday, Feb. 5 from 6-8pm. Gather with members and friends at this friendly local tavern and join us in tossing money bills (a denomination of your choice) up on the tavern’s ceiling. Until the end of February, all revenues collected will be donated to ALL.

We encourage new and present members to join one of our committees. Please contact the individual committee chairs by email.

Benefits of membership include members only shows at reduced entry fees and discounted commission on art work sold of 25% (non-members pay 40% in open shows). It’s easy to join online!

Committee News

First Thursdays will be starting up again in May. It is a collaborative downtown gallery effort to encourage people to walk from venue-to-venue each First Thursday from May through September to sample the arts, food and drinks from 5 pm to 9pm. Thanks to Board member Marshall Moyer and the First Thursday committee, details for each month’s theme are in the planning stages and will be announced on Facebook as they become available.

Our COOPERATIVE GALLERY presents beautiful and affordable art hand made by our members. There are limited spaces available. Please contact Coop Chairperson, Margarida Correia, to put your name on the waiting list. artsleagueoflowellcoop@gmail.com. Members of the Coop will be hosting a spring reception on Saturday, April 6, time to be announced. Come in, meet the Coop artists and view new work in the Coop Gallery. Light refreshments and wine will be served.

The GALLERY COMMITTEE is transitioning some of our exhibitions to online entry submissions beginning with the second show of the year, entitled, Drawn To It: Line & Shade. This will help expedite the entry process and save time for the artists entering the shows. Please pay attention to the information in the individual prospectuses, as online entry deadlines will be earlier than the drop off entry times.

The PROGRAM COMMITTEE, in conjunction with the Lowell Telecommunications Corporation (LTC) successfully began streaming monthly Sunday morning art films last October and this event will continue through March of 2019. They are open to the public. These short films are on artists and various genres and were produced by or in cooperation with the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. They are on loan to LTC and will air on LTC Channel 8 on Sunday mornings at 11am every week. ALL has selected the 3rd Sunday of the month to watch that week's films in the gallery. Come join us each month (dates are in the SAVE THE DATE section) to watch that week's film(s). Come in at 10:30am and have a hot cup of coffee and pastries before the films commence at 11am sharp. They can also be viewed streaming online at LTC.org at the same time they air on the channel.

The GATES BLOCK GARDEN has acquired an Earth Machine composter as part of a green initiative encouraged by Sierra Club’s local chapter. It was donated by member Geoff Koetsch, and will be managed by him. It is designed to handle food waste, but only vegetable matter. It will biodegrade this plus yard waste and it is rodent proof. Help our garden by donating your banana peels, spoiled greens, etc., so we can have a green garden on the outside and on the inside. Contact Mary Hart for more information.

The gallery is available for EVENT RENTAL. Please contact Steve Syverson for information.

The GREENWALD GALLERY rental dates for members has been set up for 2019. There are a few time slots still available. Members who would like to have a solo show, or a show with other artists (who do not have to be members), are asked to contact Roberta Bloom for further information.
